Courses at ANU’s Centre for Arab & Islamic studies are taught by leading experts who will take you on a journey through the languages, politics, international relations, modern history and political economy of the Middle East and Central Asia, drawing on their links with major counterparts in the Arab and Muslim world, as well as in North America and Europe.

Our language courses include:

  • Arabic– A multi-level comprehensive course offered on campus or online, on an innovative, multi-media-based platform to suit students’ busy schedules.
  • Persian – Also choose from an online multi-media-based delivery or on-campus classes. ANU is the only university in Australia to offer Persian language courses.
  • Turkish – Offered on-campus in 2016,  and online as of 2017. Turkish language is also only offered at ANU.

All language courses can be undertaken as part of an ANU degree, as stand-alone non-award courses or as cross-institutional courses. Language students have the opportunity to attend in-country intensive courses as part of their degree.

We offer unique courses such as ‘‘Islam in World Politics’, ‘Islamic Radicalism’, ‘Islam and Democracy, etc. as part of the following degrees:

  • Master of Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies (by coursework or combination of coursework and thesis)
  • Master of Islam in the Modern World
  • Graduate Certificate of Arts (specialising in Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies)
  • Bachelor of Middle Eastern Studies
